The IDA - Alphanumeric IDentity - is compulsory and it must be unique. Product number is another name for IDA. If you are selling books, for example, the IDA number could be the ISBN number.
YourShop technology attaches a product stock counter to every IDA.
Note 1:
If your shop is multilingual, a product that is the same in each language, has the same IDA in each one, so the same product stock counter counts down or may be restocked, whatever the language (or shop) in which you sell it.
If a product differs depending on the language, however, then it may need to have individual IDAs. To simplify it, it may be better to postfix the language to the IDA for example number.FR for the French product, number.EN for the English one and so on. YourShop then counts stock for each language (shop) individually.
Note 2:
Having an individual IDA for each language means more administrative work. For each language (or shop), you would have to:
1) attribute product to the welcome page
2) maintain stock
3) maintain price
4) maintain special offer price and date
5) maintain new product date
6) maintain discount
7) maintain pictures
8) maintain attachments
9) maintain download
10) move product to another category
